Welcoming in June with...Rain?
Some much-needed drought relief is coming...unfortunately, not everyone will get it.
First, scattered showers and thunderstorms developed yesterday. Central and NW Virginia had quite an event, with many of the storms becoming severe. We saw rain hugging the mountains and into SW VA. We recorded .61" of rain in just over 2 hours, as a small band of rain moved in and stalled out. More scattered showers and thunderstorms can be expected today. Rain will increase in coverage tomorrow and Sunday, perhaps giving the entire area a chance for rain. Can't complain about rain now, as we're in quite a drought. The rain will also cool temperatures into the lower 80's for areas that have experienced endless upper 80's and lower 90's this week.
Meanwhile, an area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico is making its way toward Florida. This is providing a steady shot of MUCH-NEEDED rain for them. It will cut through Florida and track up the coastline, providing many drought-stricken areas a good chance of rain. It makes sense that this low develops this time of year...today is the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Most predictions for this season are for several hurricanes, and a few major hurricanes. More info can be found at the National Hurricane Center's website.
