Surprising Snowfall Totals
This area is making the most of a pretty much snowless winter. Actually, we're making up for lost time. If you look back to December and January, we had April-like temperatures. Now we hit April, and we have January- and February-like temperatures, and snow.
Snowfall totals thus far have ranged from a trace to TEN inches. Not bad for a storm that was only supposed to net us an inch at most, and it's not over...YET. Snow showers continue in Western North Carolina and parts of East Tennessee, and widespread snow is over Eastern Kentucky and Southwest Virginia. (I haven't seen any reports from E KY or SW VA, but some totals from Lee County and Wise County have to be IMPRESSIVE)
Temperatures are remaining cold. Tonight will feature BLOCKBUSTER cold. Most records for low temperatures will be broken tonight. Mount Mitchell could be in the negative teens early tomorrow morning, at least. (To compare...this morning, Mount Mitchell's low was 0F)
Feel free to send in snowfall reports. Just use the "Contact AppalachianWX" link.
The cold and snow don't necessarily end here. Long-range modeling suggests that the cold temperatures stay close to home for the next two weeks. As a cold front moves through, the cold air dives south for at least 48 hours. Behind the fronts, wrap-around moisture, combined with cold air and a northwesterly flow, could net us an event or two similar to this. April as a whole looks to be wet and cool.
