Weekend Severe Storms? First, Mid-Week Rain
A disturbance will push through tomorrow, bringing rain to the entire area. A thunderstorm or two is not out of the question, but anything strong is highly unlikely. Rain will mainly be on the moderate side, but locally heavy rainfall is possible. The system exits tomorrow night, leaving windy conditions and warmer temperature behind it. In fact, we'll likely be into the 70's again as early as Friday. That warmth will cease again, however. A cold front looks to push through over the weekend, bringing another chance of strong/severe thunderstorms. At this point, a severe outbreak looks to be possible over much of the Southeast. A few severe storms could push into our region along a weakening squall line. Behind it, temperatures Sunday topple from the lower- to middle-70's into the 30's and 40's! Snow showers are again possible in the mountains. I don't think this will compare with Easter Weekend's event. Things look to moderate as the work week begins. However, long-range modeling is suggesting another event similar to Easter Weekend's cold snap, with more "upslope" snow showers and frigid cold. More posts will come on this event later.
If you have plans to travel west of the area on Saturday, you might want to allow extra time. If you drive into a squall line, you will experience heavy rain, gusty wind, hail, and plenty of lightning. Please, be cautious, and allow extra time if needed.
