Repeat Performances: The Ballad of an Appalachian Summer
Right on cue, just as I'm about to update the forecast...
A cold front trying to push through the area is helping with convective activity this afternoon...though it remains scattered, at best. Don't be surprised to see a few more pop up and last a bit longer than usual...but that's about the extent of it.
Moderate instability is leading to a few strong cells...
...STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WERE AFFECTING JOHNSON AND WASHINGTON
COUNTIES...
AT 518 PM EDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR WAS TRACKING
STRONG THUNDERSTORMS NEAR THE ABINGDON AREA. THE STORMS WERE NEARLY
STATIONARY.
SMALL HAIL...AND WINDS AROUND 40 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH THE STORMS.
LOCALLY HEAVY RAINS...IN EXCESS OF ONE INCH PER HOUR...MAY OCCUR WITH
THESE THUNDERSTORMS. MOTORISTS SHOULD BE ALERT FOR PONDING OF WATER
ON ROADWAYS...AND POSSIBLE MINOR FLOODING OF LOW LYING AREAS. DO NOT
DRIVE THROUGH WATERS OF UNKNOWN DEPTH. TURN AROUND! DON`T DROWN!
Look for the front to push on through tonight or tomorrow...leaving some cooler air behind it. Highs in the lower to middle 80's will feel good for a change, won't it?
